Your final formal writing assignment for this class has multiple components. From now until the
end of the semester you will actively be composing and compiling your research portfolio, of
which your 8-10 page (2,000-3,000 word) research paper is just one part.
The research portfolio, to be submitted on the due date above, will include:
Research proposal
Abstract
Final research paper (dramatically revised) (8-10 pages)
Annotated Bibliography
Works cited page in MLA format
Be sure to choose a topic that is meaningful to you and that is related to, or an extension of, our
discussion of happiness. Ideally, you will research a topic you are passionate about. As you
conduct and write up your research, keep an open mind: what excites you about your
topic? What are you discovering? How do you want to present your findings to your reader?
John Levine • College Writing R4B
Your research paper is, ultimately, a persuasive essay. This is the approach The Craft of
Research takes. If you keep in mind that your paper is making a specific point, you will most
likely avoid writing an “information dump” essay—a collection of facts that doesn’t take a
position. As the authors of CR remind us, “to make your research matter, you must address a
problem that others in your community—your readers—also want to solve” (50). Your research
paper is documentation of your pursuit of a solution to your research problem.
You must use at least three peer-reviewed articles scholarly sources to develop your paper. The
number of other sources you use is up to you, but the three scholarly sources is non-negotiable.
It’s okay to begin with Google Scholar but you should soon move to more specific databases
available through the UC Berkeley Library website. You must consult a librarian at least once
during your research process. See the library website under “Research Advisory Service” for
more information.
