Questions for Chapters 5 and 6 in Ofer Gal

Chapter 5:
What are two forms of global knowledge or global “institutions”of knowledge that had an important impact on the world in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries? Why were these important and how do they continue to shape the world today?
Chapter 6:
Chapter 6 ends with this statement: “While rejecting the theoretical and philosophical assumptions underlying magic, the emerging New Science of the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries picked up and bequeathed magic’s fundamental ambition: to know and manipulate nature at its most fundamental level, almost as if we were its maker.”
Choose one of the “magical” traditions discussed in this chapter. Identify the tradition, explain what it was and then discuss how it sought to control nature. What special knowledge was needed, what tools, who could learn this sort of magic and why would have been thought useful by people who lived in this time?
