How could I improve on the text below? This is my rough draft.
A mother’s love is something we hear about as children all throughout life. In Octavia Butler’s Bloodchild, motherly love is at the center. Our main character, Gan, has been protected his whole life by his mother. In a world where there are serpent like creatures who feed off of humans and use them to bare their young, Lien has protected her children for as long as she can.
Lien chooses to abstain from any rituals although she offered up one of her children long before they were born.
Gan is the youngest of Lien’s children and she is trying to avoid having to hand her son over to host a plethora of worm, snake like creatures. Lien has prevented Gan from becoming intoxicated off of these serpent like eggs, because it causes poor judgement and pleasure. Lien understands that the creature is due one of her children because of a deal that long before sealed her fate. Now that Lien is aging, she knows the time is coming closer. What can a desperate mother do to avoid having to sacrifice one of her children?
T’Gatoi is the snake, worm like creature. She has multiple limbs and a tail that offers numbing ease. T’Gatoi comes from a species that ages very slowly, but their eggs offer length of life, intoxication, and euphoria. Lien and T’Gatoi grew up together and long ago Lien decided she did not want to fall victim to being a host of the creatures. In a time of desperation, she told T’Gatoi if she spared her, that she would offer a child later. “Did you think I would sell him for eggs? For long life? My son?”, Lien asked T’Gatoi. This demonstrates that immortality and euphoria mean nothing to a mother who is trying to save her children.
