CONCLUSION PARAGRAPH FOR THIS PAPER
The classroom setup of a primary school classroom is an important factor in creating a successful learning environment for students. It should be designed to facilitate interaction and collaboration, provide easy access to resources, and create a comfortable atmosphere. A well-designed classroom can help increase student engagement, build a sense of community, and foster a positive learning experience for students. It can also help teachers to manage the classroom more effectively, create a better learning atmosphere, and better meet the needs of each student. By creating an effective classroom setup, primary school teachers can ensure that their students have the best chance of success in their learning journey.
Whole Group Seating Arrangement: The whole group seating area contains 10 tables with two students at each table facing forward toward the Smart Board. Each table has more than enough space to complete their individual work and not intrude on their neighbor. Additionally, I intentionally positioned the classroom to not face any centers in order to two minimize distractions.
– Behavior Problems Students: I put the three students with behavior problems at the front of each row next to either a student who needs general education or an exceptional student with a visual processing disorder to make sure that the student next to them will be able to handle the behavior. Additionally, all of the behavioral problem students are in the front row in order to keep them close to where the lesson is being taught, and instructions are being given as well as to make sure they disrupt the least amount of students possible. Lastly, they are in the front to ensure that the teacher is able to keep an eye on them at all times during the lesson as well as during individual work time.
-Exceptional Students: I have placed the two gifted students in the back of the classroom because they are able to pay attention and do work independently without an issue. I sat the student with AD/HD next to a student that needs general education on the right side of the class in the middle row in order to make sure that they are in a position where they can keep their attention and be next to a student that can help them remember what needs to be done. The student that is dyslexic is placed in the middle of the second row of the class where they can see and hear the teacher and SmartBoard, as well as ask questions to clarify any concerns they may have. Lastly, I have placed the student who has a visual processing disorder in the front of the classroom directly in front of the SmartBoard to ensure that they have the best view of the board as well as any examples that are given.
-General Education Students: I have placed the general education students all around the classroom next to the exceptional, behavioral problem, and English language learning students. These students are placed here because they are able to learn at a good pace and behave appropriately in the classroom. The students are strategically seated to ensure that the environment is nurturing and effective for all who are learning.
-Limited English Proficiency Students: I have placed all of the limited English proficiency students next to students that are proficient in the English language to help them begin understanding the language as well as have someone near them to help repeat instructions and procedures. Additionally, all of the limited English proficiency students are in the middle of the classroom because they do not need to be as close to the front of the classroom as other students, but they will be able to learn and focus.
Teacher’s desk: The teacher’s desk is placed in the front right of the classroom, facing all of the students as well as all of the centers, to ensure that the teacher is able to keep their eyes on the entire class when they are sitting at the desk.
Small Group Teaching Station: I have placed the small group teaching station in the middle of the centers to make sure that as the children are working in their centers, the teacher is able to keep an eye on them while he or she is teaching the small group lesson. Additionally, the small group station is an ideal place because the teacher will be able to instruct other groups to rotate efficiently and effectively.
Centers: The three centers that I decided to add to the classroom are the library/reading center, writing center, and math center. I placed all of the centers in the back of the classroom because they are all able to be next to each other since they are quiet centers. Additionally, they are in the back of the classroom because they are away from where whole group instruction is given. Furthermore, the centers are away from doors to ensure that the teacher sees if anyone is walking in and out of the classroom when they are in centers.
The reading center has two bookshelves and a couch, which provides a quiet and safe environment for children to feel comfortable picking up a book and reading. The reading center also has a bookshelf with Portuguese, French, Creole, and Spanish books that are translated into English to help students with limited English proficiency.
The writing center is in the back right corner of the room. The writing center contains a circular table with four chairs and a board to write on, where the teacher will have a writing activity ready for the students to complete either as a group or individually.
The math center has a round table with four chairs and manipulatives on the table that will be switched every week once every student has had a chance to visit the center. Additionally, the bulletin board next to the math center will have an activity for the students to complete regarding what they are learning that week as well as display past activities.
Computer station: The computer station is at the back of the classroom to ensure that only the students that the teacher sends to the computers are at that station. Additionally, to make sure that the students on the computers do not get distracted, they are facing away from the rest of the classroom in order to keep their attention on the computer.
Classroom door(s): Ideally, the classroom doors would be placed near the teacher and near the front of the classroom in order to make sure that the teacher sees all the students that are walking in and out of the classroom.
Board(s) and storage area(s): In this classroom, I placed two boards. The SmartBoard is the first board in the front of the classroom, where the teacher will give all the lessons and instructions. This board is placed in the front because the students will be utilizing it during whole-group and small-group learning. The bulletin board is placed next to the writing and math centers so that the teacher can display their work as well as the new concepts for the week. In the classroom, there are multiple storage areas. The first storage area is next to the door on the right. This storage area is strictly for the students’ book bags, and they will place them in their designated spots every morning. The storage that is near the door on the other side of the room is specifically for the students’ water bottles and lunchboxes because they will be exiting that door when it is lunchtime as well as when it is recess time. Lastly, the storage that is closest to the teacher’s desk is to store the student’s paperwork and supplies. This storage is next to the teacher’s desk so that the teacher has easy access to all of the necessary things they may need throughout the day.
