Calling Bullshit in the Age of Big Data: Module Two
For your final project, you will find something you believe fits the criteria to be called bullshit
(according to the definition presented in these materials) and that you have noticed in the world;
you will then call it out in an essay. (Essentially, that means you will be making an
argumentative essay. But typically, in a calling bs case, you are arguing against some idea. You
could, nonetheless, argue for something which is opposed to the BS you see. You will have to
decide how you will do it.
Your first objective, of course, is to get a sense of the concepts being presented. Then you will
need to move beyond the concepts to explore the world around and see how those concepts mesh
with your sense of that world. (The first place you should look to is at yourself—how much BS do
you put out, intentional or not? For instance, have you shared anything online that doesn’t stand
up to scrutiny? If so, you might have shared some BS.)
