ARGUMENTATION

To prepare:

In preparing your Premise, you have been reporting the findings of five research studies that demonstrate what is known about your topic. When you start writing your dissertation, however, you will build an argument for your dissertation topic as you review current research. Read the Dawidowicz and Writing Center materials and review the Commentary and ArgumentationWriting a Paper: Avoiding Logical FallaciesIncorporating Analysis and SynthesisUsing Evidence: Integrate; and Smooth Moves: Introducing and Integrating Sources into Academic Prose from the Walden Writing Center.

Consider what argumentation means to you, what it means in scholarly writing, and what it means in a dissertation literature review. Consider the role of bias, conflicting findings in research, and logic in your study. Reflect on the logical fallacies that may relate to your study argument or that you might have a tendency to commit without recognizing them. Then, consider how to put an argument together into a synthesized, integrated scholarly statement without bias or logical fallacies.Post the following:

A one-sentence description of your potential dissertation topic.
A two-sentence description of each of two challenges you have found reconciling the information you have read related to your topic. Be sure to focus on the research findings that may be contradictory.
The logic behind your reconciliation of discrepancies in the articles’ results.
At least two logical fallacies and the names of the types they represent based on the resources on fallacies you’ve read for this module, as well as where and how they might enter your justification of your study. State how you will avoid these logical fallacies.
Two specific questions for your classmates about how to address the challenges you have experienced as you began your search for current research studies or about your resolution of those challenges (e.g., challenges like similarity and differences of articles’ results, resolution methods used, importance of including certain information, and bias issues).
