This assignment has two aspects: to observe, describe, and analyze the diversity present in a given social context and how human communication is taking place within it, one in which you are not a member. First, you need to place yourself physically in a social setting off campus: e.g., in a restaurant or business, a coffee shop, or in a worship service of a group different from one’s own, and to observe and analyze the diversity present primarily in terms of ethnicity, genders, ages, religious affiliation if relevant, and/or a combination of those. You are to describe the types of people present in the setting in terms of their diversity as noted above, or the lack thereof, to the extent possible. Then describe and analyze the communication taking place, the forms it may be taking (e.g., in which language(s), through technology, gestures, and/or symbols) and how different types of people may be communicating differently. You also need to include your field notes, i.e., the notes on what you actually observed, clearly typed in 12 point font at the end of the paper. (Your field notes are not considered pages of text for the paper. They are separate at the end of the paper as an appendix.) At the top of your field notes, you need to include when you did your observation(s) and for how long. Without your field notes and the date(s) and duration of your observations, the paper will receive a score of 0. You need to be in your social setting, i.e., your “field site,” for at least one hour as a minimum amount of time to receive a passing grade for the assignment, and of course more time in your site is encouraged. You may also visit your field site more than once.
Research – ‘observation’ steps:
Place yourself physically in a social setting off campus, one in which you are not a member for a minimum of one hour.
Observe and describe the diversity of the people present (e.g., ethnicity, “race,” gender, age, religious affiliation, etc.).
Take field notes!
Describe the communication taking place, the forms it may be taking (e.g., in which language(s), through technology, gestures, and/or symbols) and how different types of people may be communicating.
Take field notes! Be sure to include when you did your observation(s) and for how long at the top of your field notes at the end of the paper.

The paper in which you describe your research and provide your analysis is to be 2-4 double-spaced pages of text, not counting the title page, appendix, or a references cited page if needed in 12 point font with 1 inch margins. Anything written after 4 pages will not be read. You will need to have a clear and explicit thesis statement at the beginning of the paper describing what you will show in it. In keeping with how a thesis statement is written in contemporary cultural anthropology, you need to have something such as the following: “In this paper (or essay) I will describe (or show, or examine, or discuss) . . . ” and then clearly state what you intend to show in the paper. Or, you can write something such as “This paper will describe . . . “ and then again clearly state what you aim to demonstrate in your paper. The thesis statement may be more than one sentence. Write the paper formally, not as if one is texting or conversing.
Do not hesitate to state the obvious. Remember to get beyond only stating you liked or did not like something, your reactions, and simply offering an opinion. You also need to support any of your assertions. At the end of the paper, have a brief conclusion summarizing your main point(s).
The paper needs to be uploaded as a single document in Word in the column named for it on Canvas and will be submitted to the University’s plagiarism check Turnitin.com to aid in determining whether plagiarism has occurred. Either plagiarism or academic dishonesty will result in a 0 score for the assignment and may result in you receiving an F or FF for the course. The paper is to be your own work. A draft prior to submission will not be read by the instructor or the teaching assistant. Remember to follow the Writing Reminders within the course Files and that there is the University’s Writing Center. Using any sources from outside of this class is prohibited. If using a source from this class use in-text citations only in this format (Author year, pg(s), e.g., (Murphy 1999, 47). Not following these guidelines including for citations will also result in a score of 0 for the paper. Finally, number your pages of text and field notes but not the title page. The paper is due by class time on March 20th. It may be turned in earlier. Late papers will be accepted but with a late penalty of ten percent deducted from the possible score of the paper for each calendar day the paper is late. As noted above, the paper is worth a possible 50 points. If you have any questions, do ask.
