Introduction
The third in-class essay will take place on the date in the schedule at the end of the syllabus that is labelled “metaphysics worldview essay.” It will be worth 40 points, just like the first two were. You will be asked to write an essay approximately two pages in length about the worldview-related material that we have studied since you wrote the last in-class essay.
Subject
One of the goals of this course is to deepen your understanding of the differences between the Christian worldview and a naturalistic worldview by studying worldviews using the tools of philosophy. Since the last essay we’ve studied two main things: the nature of the mind (whether it is physical or immaterial) and the debate over free will and determinism. In this essay you will write about both of these topics. Here is the exact essay prompt that you will be given:
Please compose an essay that begins by explaining the term “worldview” as accurately and completely as you can based on what we’ve discussed so far in class. Do not use the words “world” and “view” in your definition and don’t settle for merely providing an analogy. Next, since one of the clearest differences between a theistic worldview and a naturalistic one is the position that each takes on the nature of the human mind, please explain what mind-body dualism is, which worldview it best complements, and one of the best arguments for dualism. Then explain what physicalism is (with regards to the nature of the mind), which worldview physicalism best complements, and one of the best arguments for physicalism. Then move on to the free will debate, briefly explaining the three possible positions and then addressing how each aligns to theism or naturalism. You needn’t go into detail about the arguments for the various positions, since by now you will probably be running out of time.
