The Affordable Care Act, known as Obamacare, is a health care reform signed by President Barack Obama in March 2010. It aims to provide health insurance coverage for the unemployed uninsured, lower costs/improve health care system efficiency, preventative care, and extension of care to dependents under the age of 26 and prohibit insurance claim denial or higher premiums for preexisting conditions (Green, 2018). Since 2014, under provisions of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), states have expanded eligibility for Medicaid to persons under the age of 65, families with income below 133% of the federal poverty level (FPL) for that family’s size (Medicaid.gov, n.d). With the help of Obama care, health care services have reached more people, especially the least qualified individuals for insurance with chronic health conditions. Also, with ACA, public health services like home visiting, maternal child programs, and specialized behavioral health services, in addition to prevention and protection programs, have been made available to the general population (Culture of health blog, 2012). Health care reform is incomplete without the duties of the nurse. Nurses play a crucial role in the reform and its implementation. The nurse is a frontline caregiver and advocates for patients, providing information on how to access health care, get better insurance coverage through ACA, and the benefits it offers patients. Also, the nurse implements the help of the ACA by rendering services that include assessments, establishing and integrating public and private health, population health strategy, clinical preventative services, and maternal and child home visiting (Edmond, 2015).
