Part 1 – Latin jazz:
Juan Tizol, a Puerto Rican trombonist, joined Ellington’s band in 1929. As a member of
Ellington’s group, Tizol introduced Latin influence to some of the group’s songs – including
“Caravan,” although the Latin component is relatively subdued (some of the comments on
Youtube say it sounds more Arabic!). The percussion and rhythmic feel stand out though, even
in this version, as quite different from Ellington’s usual sound. Tizol is the trombonist and mostfeatured performer; other soloists include clarinet and, unusually, violin. Tizol was also the
driving compositional force behind the song – he came up with the opening melody, then he
and Ellington fleshed it out. “Caravan” was first performed and recorded in the 1930’s, the
performance here is from ’52:
