Health care and law are inseparable. There has to be legislation seeking to improve people’s health depending on the health problems people currently face or have experienced in the past. As advocates of quality health care, nurses severing as legislators understand health matters in detail and can influence other legislators by providing evidence-based data and reasonable health outcomes projections. Their intervention is critical in health care delivery improvement. 

As a legislator who is also a nurse, Lauren Underwood [serving Illinois’ 14th Congressional district] is one of the youngest legislators serving in Congress and playing a crucial role in advancing health-related matters. Lauren Underwood helps in many ways to improve the nation’s health through advocacy and legal interventions. As the American Nurses Association (2021) explains, Lauren Underwood has supported communities and advocated for their support for preparation and response to disasters and public health emergencies. Other crucial engagements include implementing the Affordable Care Act, which broadened access for those on Medicare. Overall, she is passionate about improving health care quality and uses her position to fight what the population needs in terms of quality and affordable health care. 

Regarding her specific bills vital in influencing health care, Lauren Underwood’s recent contribution is the Maternal Health Pandemic Response Act of 2020 (H.R.8027). One of the major proposals of this Act is obliging the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to carry out an education campaign about pregnancy and Covid-19. As the CDC engages in education, the Government Accountability Office should report on essentials such as maternal health emergency preparedness (GovTrack, 2021). She influences quality health care delivery by implementing ways of improving maternal care, which helps to reduce maternal mortality.
