The concept of leadership is critical to the nursing profession. Nurses should develop effective leadership attributes and qualities to deliver quality patient care and ensure safety while undertaking different roles (Al-Dossary, 2017). One of the formal position of leadership is being a nurse manager. A nurse manager is responsible and accountable to the daily operations of the workplace that includes selection of employees, hiring and orientation, evaluation and development of staff as well as allocation of resources and their management. Besides, nurse managers oversee risk management activities in their units and facilities, monitor and ensure patient safety as well as being financially accountable. The nurse managers as leaders should offer inspiration, guidance and influence the professional practice of their frontline nurses.
The educational preparation required for nurse managers include higher level degrees like Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) and a Master of Science in Nursing degree (MSN). These programs alongside experience allow nurse managers to execute their duties in the most effective way since they are considered as expert knowledge brokers. They translate organizational policies into action at the forefront in health care.
As leaders, nurse managers must possess the ability to inspire and influence their subordinate and ensure that they deliver quality outcomes. Imperatively, they require strong leadership qualities and attributes to be successful in their roles. These qualities and attributes include effective communication and interpersonal skills to interact with nursing staff, mentorship attributes where they deploy motivational strategies to empower their trainees as well as guide them to understanding their roles as care providers (Joseph & Huber, 2015). Further, nurse managers must demonstrate professionalism and be emotional intelligent to understand their staff nurses and ensure that they perform effectively. Again, nurse managers should possess personal attributes and values like integrity, honesty and diligence as well as dedication. They must allow staff nurses to participate in decision-making as well as advocate for better workplace conditions.
