Purpose  

The purpose of this assignment is to provide the student an opportunity to reflect on the weekly concepts learned in the course.  

Activity Learning Outcomes  

Through this assignment, the student will demonstrate the ability to:  

Examine roles and competencies of advanced practice nurses essential to performing as leaders and advocates of holistic, safe, and quality care (CO1)  

Apply concepts of person-centered care to nursing practice situations. (CO2)  

Analyze essential skills needed to lead within the context of complex systems. (CO3)  

Explore the process of scholarship engagement to improve health and healthcare outcomes in various settings (CO4)  

Due Date:   

Post should be entered to the Weekly Reflection on Learning thread by Sunday at 11:59 p.m. MST each week.   

This assignment will follow the late assignment policy specified in the course syllabus.  

Students are expected to submit assignments by the time they are due. Assignments submitted after the due date and time will receive a deduction of 10% of the total points possible for that assignment for each day the assignment is late. Assignments will be accepted, with penalty as described, up to a maximum of three days late, after which point a zero will be recorded for the assignment.  

In the event of a situation that prevents timely submission of an assignment, students may petition their instructor for a waiver of the late submission grade reduction. The instructor will review the student’s rationale for the request and make a determination based on the merits of the student’s appeal. Consideration of the student’s total course performance to date will be a contributing factor in the determination. Students should continue to attend class, actively participate, and complete other assignments while the appeal is pending.

Week 2 

What do you most look forward to in your new role as an NP? What concerns do you have about transitioning to the role? Did anything about the APN roles surprise you? 

This week we learned about how the nurse practitioner role was born in the 1960s when nurse Loretta Ford and physician Henry Silver suggested that the nurse practitioner role could help alleviate some of the primary care shortages, specifically in pediatrics. From this, the pediatric nurse practitioner curriculum was developed. Resistance was met from both the nursing and medical profession. With some feeling that they were trying to “playing doctor” and others feeling they were “practicing medicine without a license” (Chamberlain, 2022). We also learned about the challenges of credentialing which varies amongst states. Each state defines how an NP can practice and sets forth the restrictions and requirements for continued education. This can be challenging for state legislatures and trickles down to confusion amongst providers and educators (Chamberlain, 2022). 

I most look forward to the knowledge that master’s prepared nursing offers. I always want to learn more. I am eager to bring my 9 years of RN bed-side experience to the provider world. I have personally encountered physicians who are more focused on the values than the person itself. I am eager to provide person-centered care to my patients! Some concerns that I have transitioning into the role is lacking the confidence behind complex medical decisions. I hope with Chamberlains curriculum and my practicum site I will gain this confidence and enhance my critical thinking skills!

I have learned from this week’s reading the historical development of advanced practice nursing—the initial resistance to approval. I learned how advanced practice nursing has grown past just augmenting the traditional physical practices and now has developed to provide a wide variety of services in health care settings. 
In my new role as an NP, I look forward to being more confident and autonomous in my clinical decision-making. The APN roles are not surprising to me because I have constantly interacted with a couple of my colleagues and friends who are master’s prepared nurses and have learned a lot from them, including my expectations. My concern with transitioning to the new role is my busy schedule. Keeping a full-time job and being a mother of 3, of which 2 are toddlers, keeps me busy all day. However, I have been trying different ways to make this transition easier since I started this program last week. Hopefully, it will get better every day.

Hello Professor and Classmates,  

The more I learn about the nurse practitioner role, the more excited I am! I am really looking forward to having a provider role in the health care system. I am looking forward to using my advanced education to prescribe medications, perform invasive interventions, and diagnose patients to provide excellent patient care in my community. I do know that the transition into the new role will be tough regardless of my situation at the time of graduation. My main concern about transitioning to this role would be related to my timing of when I decide to have a family of my own, as I know having children is a huge priority, which can interfere with a successful transition.  

While completing the assignment for this week, I did learn a few things about the APRN roles. I did not realize that clinical nurse specialists can actually have special bedside roles, as I typically see them in education or supervisory positions. Furthermore, I did not know that certified nurse-midwives follow women of all ages, I assumed this role was primarily for pregnant patients and neonates. I am glad I learned more about these other advanced practice roles and I enjoyed this weeks assignment.  

I am looking forward to hearing everyone’s thoughts on this week’s material!

Right Alethia, my main concern is the fear of making mistakes as a new graduate without experience. However, on second thought, we would have gone through clinicals; that experience can help ease some of the fears. I am becoming excited too.

Week 2 Reflection of Learning 

  

After reading this week’s lesson and the latter of a research article it was very surprising to learn that many advanced nurse practitioners received their education through hospital-based certificate programs that prepared them to function as nurse clinicians or nurse anesthetists and as the nurse clinicians programs grew popularity the educational requirements then moved into the specialized graduate level of programs at universities in order to obtain credentials (Chamberlain College of Nursing, 2022). After reading the textbook, I was also enlightened that the role of the nurse practitioner was developed as a way to provide cost-effective health care to rural, underserved areas as there was a shortage of primary care physicians, which emerged during the 1960s and simultaneously increased the development of the nurse practitioner program (DeNisco & Barker, 2015, p. 20). 

I look forward to gaining profound knowledge, and clinical expertise that would acquire me to lead and manage patient-centered care with complex competencies of diversity in a cultured center healthcare atmosphere. My goal is to provide transparent, holistic care with the collaboration of all dynamics centered around optimizing a patient’s mental health and well-being. I look forward to being an asset and change agent in my patient’s life that will help to maximize their overall well-being, and mental and physical health and give them a more positive outcome in the health care system. 

What concerns me

most about transitioning into my future role as an advanced mental health nurse practitioner is the fear of starting over as I am so accustomed to practicing independently within my role now, I am very headstrong, knowledgeable, and confident. My biggest fear is having a lack of knowledge, being a novice, second-guessing myself, and not having clinical confidence. Being fully aware that I will pass through all transitional phases, especially within the identify loss phase as I become a novice with developing and rising fear, and increasing anxiety; and the evolution phase as I expect to be going back and forth with questioning my autonomy role; and lastly incorporation phase as I gain a sense of leadership within my new role and reassurance of how to apply the clinical competency within my new career as a mental health nurse practitioner. Thus, I am overly excited to tackle this position and I am open to gaining a diversified clinical arena of knowledge.
