Module Description

This module will address both the fundamental subject components necessary to effectively source, design, research and disseminate business consultancy projects for both small to medium sized businesses and larger companies. The module content also takes an international perspective and fully appreciates that the role of a consultancy now requires a blend of both physical and virtual skills /support in the pursuit of viable and tangible results.

Module Learning Outcomes

In the Assessments for the module, the students will evidence the following learning outcomes:
1 Appraise, evidence and apply the concepts and practices of management consulting within a range of sectors, organizations and job family roles
2 Critique and defend the processes required for a consultant to meet a range of potential research settings
3 Select and evaluate the tools and techniques required to source, critique and implement a range of potential viable and realistic solutions
4 Debate and articulate the critical, methodical and creative problem-solving practices required to be an ethical and reflective internal or external consultant

Assessment

Task 1 – The Business Consultancy Report (2,000 words, not including the appendices)

The Business Consultancy Report will be written in the third person, be based on the organization’s practice applied to analytical models and compared with competitor activity. The content of the report must identify key areas where action can be taken to support business development. The report must contain the following:

  • Introduction – A review of the key factors important to the client providing clear directions for the content of the report. This will include a short review of your research strategy to develop an understanding of the business and the potential impact of the project focus.
  • A review of research relevant to the business sector, area of operation and project focus
  • A consultancy level environmental and business analysis relevant to the sector and area of operation
  • Application of research, including the impact on cost of current activity, employee impact, alignment to strategy, marketing and PR influences, and external forces driving change within the organization’s sector
  • Conclusion – a review of the potential impact of the research and analysis findings supported by a critical evaluation on the key factors impacting on organizational strategy and external forces driving This section should identify key areas to be addressed in the action plan (Task 2)

A template for the report will be provided for all students to use for their submission.

Assessment Your Business Consultancy Report has a weighting of 70% of the overall marks and be delivered within 2,000 words.

Task 2 – Consultancy Action Plan (1,000 words)

Assessment Submission

A template for this submission is provided on Canvas to be used in the submission. The action plan must use the key areas identified in your report to deliver business development and include the following:

Clearly stated actions supported by: suggested implementation plan, identification of possible risk, action to mitigate risk, and intended impact of the recommendation in meeting the strategic objectives of the business

Assessment: Your Business Consultancy Action Plan has a weighting of 30% of the overall marks and is delivered within 1,000 words using the template provided to you on Canvas

Word Limit:

The word count must be stated on the front page of your Professional Project.

Summarizing and compressing the information in your assignment into the word limit is one of the skills that students are expected to acquire and demonstrate as part of the assignment process.

The word limit for the professional project is set as 3,000 words.

If this is exceeded, then the following penalty will have to be applied:

  • Title page
  • Reference List
  • Appendices

Please note, in text citations [e.g. (Smith, 2011)] and direct secondary quotations [e.g. “dib- dab nonsense analysis” (Smith, 2011 p.123)] are included in the word count.

Submission of Assessment:

  • 1 electronic copy of the work should be submitted via the VLE (Canvas) Turnitin Submission area under Assessments and Feedback, prior to the deadline on the above deadline Instructions on how to submit via Turnitin are available within all module sites in the VLE (Canvas)
  • The University’s Generic Marking Criteria attached will be used to assess the Professional Project and the presentation.
  • Formal feedback and results will be provided 4 weeks after the submission date on Canvas. Please note that if marks are released prior to assessment boards students should be aware that they are subject to ratification and may change depending on the outcome of the assessment board.
