MGT201 Managing Self and Others
Assessment Brief
Introduction
The purpose of this assessment is to develop your understanding of your identity as potential managers, leaders, and employees. This assessment will draw from a range of diagnostics and a video case example to explore your understanding of how you manage self and potentially manage others. The focus of the assessment will give you space to consider your behavior, action, skills, knowledge and values. The assessment is divided into 3 parts:
Part A: Managing Self
Part B: Managing Others
Part C: Literature Reflection
By the end of this module successful students will be able to do the following:
1. Appraise and evaluate personal and professional qualities and attributes to explain behavior and its effectiveness.
2. Identify and consider the implications of concepts and practices of effective
management of self and others (specifically human and relational).
3. Apply appropriate people management techniques to the contemporary employment relationship.
Part A: Managing Self (35 Marks)
This is a diagnostic reflective account of your understanding of your emerging professional behavior and identity. By selecting one of the professional bodies’ frameworks identify 1 behavior you can demonstrate and 1 behavior you would like to develop. This should be completed as a JOHARI window and using extracts from the Business Graduates Association Career Development – Career Assessment Tests.
Present your diagnosis as tables as indicated below:

Part B: Managing Others (35 Marks)
Based on your JOHARI Window for Part A you now reflect on how you would manage others by reviewing, reflecting on and evaluating a single experience or event.
With reference to your experience or event, write a 1000-word reflection with extracts from your JOHARI Window (Part A) where you advise a manager on one of the following:
1.Managing Performance and engagement
2.Managing Conflict
3.Managing Difficult and Sensitive Issues
4.Managing Negotiation through influence and communication
To support your reflective essay, include relevant academic citations from theoretical frameworks and models.
Part C: Literature Reflection (30 Marks)
Critically reflect on your future professional identity (as a manager, leader, or employee) using Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) or Super’s Lifespan, Life-Space Theory. Discuss and evaluate how you will develop the attributes of:
Professional ethics and etiquette
Readiness for graduate employment
Support your reflection with theoretical concepts and practical strategies.
Present this as a 1500-word reflective essay including academic citations and you should also draw from your answers from Part A and B of this assessment.
Structure of Assessment
The assessment should be presented as a single document with the following
Cover page – Including Student name, student number, programme of study and date of submission
Part A: Managing Self – Tables
Part B: Managing Others – 1000-word reflective review
Part C: Literature Reflection – 1500 Reflective Essay
Bibliography (to include all readings which have informed you thinking in the completion of this assessment)
Submission
To submit as 1 document to the MGT201 Final Submission Drop box located within the MGT201 Canvas site no later than 23.59 on May 13th 2026
The use of AI is not acceptable for this assessment and if AI is used this could lead to you being submitted for Academic Misconduct to the University of Sunderland Academic Misconduct Panel.
Assessment Criteria and Marking Framework
Assessment Part Criteria
Part A: Managing Self 0 -5 The tables give limited understanding and appreciation of the JOHARI Window, where there are limited extracts from the BGA Career Tests; there is limited evaluation and justification for the professional behavior chosen
6-10 The tables start to demonstrate understanding and appreciation of the JOHARI Window, however there is limited extracts from the BGA Career Tests; there is the start of evaluation and justification for the professional behavior chosen
11-20 The tables demonstrate understanding and appreciation of the JOHARI Window, where there are extracts from the BGA Career Tests; however, the evaluation and justification for the chosen professional behavior could be clearer
21-28 The tables start to indicate some insights and critical thinking where there is evidence of the JOHARI Window showing connections between the extracts from the BGA Career Tests; this is further developed in the evaluation and justification for the chosen professional behavior
29-35 The tables include critical insights and connections between the JOHARI window and the extracts from the BGA Career Tests; this includes appreciation, consideration and connections and this is further enhanced within the evaluation and justification for the chosen professional behavior
Part B: Managing Others 0 -5 The 1000-word reflection does not draw evidence from the JOHARI window in terms of managing performance and engagement or managing conflict or managing difficult and sensitive issues or managing negotiation through influence and communication.
6-10 The 1000-word reflection does draw limited evidence from the JOHARI Window in terms of managing performance and engagement or managing conflict or managing difficult and sensitive issues or managing negotiation through influence and communication.
11-20 The 1000-word reflection does some evidence from the JOHARI Window in terms of managing performance and engagement or managing conflict or managing difficult and sensitive issues or managing negotiation through influence and communication. There are some theoretical connections made; however, they are mainly descriptive.
