I have chosen the company Target. Please write a five page paper for the Ethical evaluation of target based on the following requirments and rubric attached.
Assignment: For your final project, you will write an ethical evaluation of a company based upon what you have learned this semester. Essentially, you will answer the questions, “Would you want to work at this company?” and “Why?” or “Why not?” You will choose your company from a list in the form of a “sign-up sheet,” which is here: Final Project Sign-Up SheetLinks to an external site.Links to an external site.
Your project should be about 5 pages in length, using 12-point font and double-spacing.
In this project, you will assess elements of this company that we have discussed since mid-term. You will assess the company’s
Corporate Culture
Corporate Social Responsibility
Employer Responsibilities and Employee Rights
Sustainability
Corporate Governance
*optional* Workplace Privacy/Monitoring, Ethics in Marketing
In order to accomplish this, you may use both material’s from the company’s website as well as additional materials you might find. Take care to consider the integrity of sources you find on the internet; try to privilege sources that are journalistic/news, trade/industry, or even scholarly. There is no minimum requirement for how many of each of these types of sources you must use, but try to reference at least 3 sources in your paper. Steer clear of information that is biased or fringe—no need to overthink this, just try to avoid the crazies. You will likely find a good deal of what you need on the company’s website, but you should at least check what you find there against sources that are external to the company’s website, since the company’s website is unlikely to advertise its own weaknesses or failings.
Try to address at least 3 or 4 of the categories listed above. If you sincerely struggle to find enough information to do so, contact me to discuss the problem; I may let you choose a different company. Before contacting me, however, please be sure that there really is a problem; I expect you to try in earnest to find information and by the time you contact me, you should have a very specific idea of what information is available and what is not. If you choose a company that has been involved in many scandals, you do not need to cover them all.
You should come to class on your assigned day prepared to “present” your findings to the class. This will not be a formal presentation to be made from the front of the classroom: on that day you will simply go around the room and speak for no longer than a few minutes (about 3, no longer than 5), presenting the highlights of your project. You might start by saying that you “would/wouldn’t want to work for X company because…” From there, describe your most important points, perhaps including any information you thought was really interesting, or that surprised you. A good presentation can only help both your final project and your participation grade; the only way your presentation can count against you is if you don’t do it.
Assessment: Firstly, I will assess your project firstly according to your understanding of corporate culture, CSR, employer responsibilities and employee rights, sustainability, and corporate governance, etc., and what constitutes ethical strengths, weaknesses, and failings within these categories. Secondly, I will assess your project based upon the strength of the claim that you make. You should seriously consider utilizing counter-argument (conceding possible arguments against the one you are making and addressing those arguments) in order to strengthen your claims. Part of my assessment of your claims will rest upon the strength of the evidence you provide. You should cite your sources using parenthetical documentation, footnotes, or endnotes. Pick a citation style and stick with it. The quality of your writing will only negatively affect your grade insofar as it prevents me from understanding what you are trying to say; while this is not a writing course, if I cannot understand the points you are making, I can hardly give you credit for them. If I have to work very hard to understand what you are saying because your writing is weak, it will also negatively affect your grade. If your paper is exceptionally well-written, it will certainly help your grade, but so long as I can easily understand you, your grade will not suffer.
Tips: You should plan to write an introductory and a concluding paragraph since you will be making an argument. Introduce your argument in your introductory paragraph and here, stake your claim and signpost the major points that you will be making. Each paragraph should express a complete thought about some aspect of the ethics of this company. You may or may not end up devoting one paragraph each to the above-mentioned elements, but try to keep your paragraphs to a reasonable length: if you have more than one thought to express about the corporate culture of this company, you should feel free to devote more than one paragraph to it, as opposed to trying to squeeze it all into one paragraph that stretches for more than a page. The organization and structure of your project, as well as sufficient signposting, should let me know which of the above elements you are discussing at any point in time, even if you devote, for example, an entire paragraph to a sustainability scandal.
In instructing you to answer the question of whether or not you would want to work for your chosen company, I’m assuming that you care about more than just the categories that affect employees most directly, namely employer responsibilities/employee rights, and perhaps corporate culture. I’m assuming that you care about CSR, sustainability, corporate governance, and general integrity of the company for which you work. Use the question to structure an evaluation of the ethics of your chosen company.
There is no right/wrong choice between whether you would/would not want to work for this company; what matters is that you are able to make a claim about a company’s ethics, show that you understand the ethical concepts we have studied this semester, and make an application of these to real-world situations. If you think that a company’s executives are doing well but that the lower-level employees are not treated fairly, you might argue that you wouldn’t like to work there.
