Directions: Select three articles related to your thesis for this paper. Locate these in the databases we explored in class. (EBSCO or Gale-Opposing Viewpoints)
In an annotated bibliography, you will essentially do four things: summarize, analyze, show relevance, and reflect. Having done this, you will be in a position to evaluate whether or not the article will be useful to you in developing your paper.
Begin by selecting and reading your article. Keep in mind the following questions to make your annotated bibliography easier to complete:
Does the article seem like a reliable and current source? Why?
Is the research biased or objective?
Are the facts well documented?
Who is the author? Is he or she qualified in this subject?
Is this source scholarly, popular, some of both? How does it fit into your research?
Is this a helpful resource? (Too scholarly? Not scholarly enough? Too general/specific?) Explain.
How is this source relevant to your topic? Be specific.
Has it helped you to narrow or to otherwise direct your topic? Explain.
Use the following framework for each annotated bibliography:
Lead the annotated bibliography with a FULL citation in mla for the source.
Then, in paragraph form, a paragraph that
Summarizes the article ~ give an outline of the main arguments and topics
Analyzes (evaluates) the article ~ What are the strengths and weaknesses? How does it compare to (agree/disagree with) other perspectives? What can you say about the reliability of of the source (i.e. the credibility of the author(s) and the presence of bias).
Reflects ~ How is the source relevant to your topic/thesis? How might it support your argument?
