Unit Aim

Promoting health is the responsibility of everyone who works in Health and Social Care. It is also an important government agenda. So how do we as individuals promote the health of our service users and the government promote health within the wider population?

Within this unit learners will look at how the government through organisations such as Public Health England tries to improve the health of the population. They will look at policies and activities they undertake to improve the health of the nation and their role in monitoring the population’s health. What factors can affect health and the government’s role in trying to reduce these will be discussed.

From an individual’s view, learners will look at the role of health promotion and some common approaches and models used by practitioners to promote and protect the health of the communities they serve. They will look at how to run a small health campaign and how to overcome barriers to participation.

It may seem strange to look at this area if you currently care for service users with long-term conditions, but as professionals those working in Health and Social Care must always be looking at ways to support service users to maintain as healthy a lifestyle as possible to minimise development of future health conditions.

Please note that for learners working in or studying the qualification in the UK, their evidence in relation to legislation, regulations, codes of practice etc must be in a UK context. If learners are not in the UK,  they must state the country they are referring to in relation to these areas.

HSC303 Assignment Tasks

Introduction:

Task 1: Introducing Public Health Policy

Helping Notes:

For task 1, you are required to produce a briefing note for your boss about the role played by public health policy in the improvement of the health of the population. Your answer must include the following:

 An outline of the process used in the development of public health policy

(Describe the steps involved in creating public health policy, such as identifying health issues, gathering evidence, consulting stakeholders, etc. Explain briefly how these steps lead to final decisions that guide national health actions.)

Identify and explain the role played by different groups in the development of public health policy

(Identify and explain the contribution of organisations or groups like government departments, public health agencies, community groups, etc., in the development of public health policy. Explain how each group influences policy through evidence, expertise, or public input.)

A discussion of how the government monitors the health of the nation.

(Describe the systems used to track health trends, such as national surveys, disease surveillance, and data collection through the NHS and Public Health England. Explain how monitoring helps the government identify risks, plan services, and improve population health.)

NOTE: Task 1 has a specified word count of 450-550 words. Keep your response concise and aligned with the given guidelines.

Task 2: Health Promotion in Practice

Helping Notes:

Task 2 has two parts:

• Poster development and delivery
• Brief discussion

Poster Development and Delivery:

To fulfil the requirement of the first part of task 2, select a health and social care-related campaign and create a self-made, audience-appropriate health promotion poster using tools such as Canva or PowerPoint, ensuring it is visually clear and contains original, concise content

After designing the poster, you are required to deliver your health promotion campaign to one of the following audiences:

• the management or board of the organisation in which you are employed
• a local community centre

OR

• a social media platform of your choice (e.g. TikTok, Instagram, or Facebook).

Note: This part of task 2 has a limited word count of 250-300 words (word count applies only to the poster text). Moreover, you must provide appropriate evidence of both the poster and its delivery. Include the completed poster and all supporting evidence in the appendices of this assignment. Acceptable evidence of delivering your campaign within your organisation or a local community centre includes photographs or recorded footage of the campaign. Where the campaign is delivered via a social media platform, you must provide the direct link to the post, along with screenshots of audience engagement, such as likes, dislikes, and comments. All submitted evidence must comply with data protection requirements, and any personal or identifiable information must be fully anonymised.

Brief Discussion:

For the second part of task 2, you must also include a brief discussion explaining the method chosen and how the campaign was carried out. Your briefing must consist of:

• An outline of this issue and its impact on health across the nation, including the potential benefits of health improvement in this area.

(A short explanation of the health issue you selected and describe how it affects people nationally, such as physical, mental, or social consequences. Then highlight the positive outcomes that could follow if this issue is addressed, for example, reduced illness, improved well-being, or lower healthcare costs.)

• Identify and explain how an approach was chosen to promote public health on this issue.

(Explanation of the health promotion model and approach you chose for this issue. Examples of health promotion models are the Health Belief Model or the Stages of Change Model, and approaches may include media campaigns and awareness programs. Describe how you chose the model and approach for your issue, and why these are suitable and how they will help reach and influence the target audience.)

• A judgment as to the likely effectiveness of this campaign based on the nature of the problem and the approach used

(Assess how well the campaign is likely to work, using reasons linked to the issue, the chosen method, and the needs of the population. Then give a brief conclusion on whether the approach is practical, achievable, and likely to make a positive difference.)

Note: This part of task 2 has a specific word count of 1200-1250. Make sure your response is aligned with the guidelines and does not exceed the wordcount.
