He was born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1925, but spent most of his childhood in Lansing, Michigan. He grew up in poverty and experienced a lot of racism and discrimination. He turned to a life of crime at a young age, however when he was sent to prison he changed to become a better man. During his time behind bars Malcolm X discovered the Nation of Islam and became a devout Muslum , adopting the last name “X”, rejecting his slave name. Malcom X heavily impacted the African American community in the 1950’s and 1960’s he did this by advocating for social struggles, African American empowerment, and racial equality.
