Word count:  1100 words (Narration: 500 words worth 10%; Discussion: 600 words worth 20%) Part A (Narration): Write a brief narrative (500 words) based on an experience you, or someone you know, has had. You may write in the first person (I) or in the third person (he, she, they). Students should focus upon originality and creativity, clarity of writing, and show clear implementation of narrative strategies in Part A. The Narration cannot be a piece you have submitted in another unit. Part B (Discussion): In another 600 words to be presented in a short essay format, explain and analyse two strategies of narration and their effects in relation to: construction of narrative events characterisation how story has been mediated through plot, with reference to the strategies you utilised to construct narrative time progress from equilibrium, through disruption, to new equilibrium  Students should focus upon critical engagement with narrative strategies and concepts, depth of discussion and analysis, clarity of writing, correct essay format (introduction, body paragraphs, conclusion, thesis statement, topic sentences etc.), and referencing skills in Part B. Part B is not about issues of morality and ethics, nor is it a description/outline of the narrative. The Discussion will be 3 paragraphs in length (introduction, 2 body paragraphs); a concluding paragraph is not required for this assessment, though a concluding sentence is encouraged. Part B is not about issues of morality and ethics, nor is it a description/outline of the narrative.  Assessments that do not meet the minimum requirement of referencing at least 2 scholarly, theoretical readings from the Unit Readings cannot receive more than a bare pass for Part B. Students should engage meaningfully with concepts and research e.g. defining terms, explaining/discussing quotes. Note: short stories and fiction from the Unit Reader are not considered scholarly, theoretical readings Tips: Structure the discussion component (part B) like an essay. Include an intro and a proposition statement. Don’t stop at describing the techniques that you have used in your story, link them to their effects on the text. For instance, if you discuss the way your text decelerates over a moment or point of the narrative, explain how this draws attention to that moment, or accords it importance. Define concepts and terms. For instance, if you notice that you’ve used analepsis in your text, explain that analepsis is a flashback and define it with reference to the texts you have read on the topic. It’s a good idea to discuss the narrative (in Part B) as though it had been written by someone else. For instance say “the main character” rather than “I” in order to introduce emotional distance between yourself and the narrative you have written. This can encourage deeper analytical thinking. Make quotes and references work for you, and always give them a context. Don’t insert a quote from a reading without explaining and unpacking it in your own words. Remember that this story is going to be marked and critically evaluated, and that you are yourself going to need to analyse it in part B – for that reason, writing about very traumatic incidents may not be advisable. This is completely up to your own discretion, it’s just a reminder of the nature of the assessment. Leave time for editing before the due date. It’s important that you edit your work for a clean, clear script that allows your ideas to shine through to the marker. I recommend allowing at least 2 days before the due date just to go back over your work and address any issues you might have with grammar, spelling and punctuation.
