For this writing assignment, you will write a paper in which you argue and opinion based on research and evidence. While arguing your topic, you should use one of the three appeals we talked about in class (Logos, Ethos, Pathos). You also need to remember to include a paragraph for counter argument(s).
As you do your research, I’m looking for at least THREE different sources. Assume that the audience of your paper does not agree with you. Now you need to convince them you are right.
The best way to structure your paper:
Introduction—Come up with a debatable thesis. This means your thesis should not be a fact. You should also include background information that explains the situation and lets us know the significance of your topic. You should also establish your point of view.
Body paragraphs—Find at least three specifically different aspects of your argument. These aspects will be the subjects of your supporting paragraphs. Support each subject with multiple instances from the piece of art. Also, use what other’s have written to support you claims.
Also, include a paragraph that addresses any counter arguments against your thesis. Do this by showing common ground, and by pointing out the flaws in the counter arguments.
Conclusion—Summarize the evidence and arguments you have just laid out in the body paragraphs. Show how it is all related. Sum it all up in a final statement.
Remember to brainstorm for this (first step in the writing process). Make sure you have a nice, small focus for this paper—you will probably have to narrow down your topic a bit. Some examples might be:
Homeless people in Houston should be given access to services—such as regular food donations, public restrooms, and camping facilities—because it would improve life for all inhabitants of the city.
Americans should eliminate the regular consumption of fast food because a fast food diet leads to preventable and expensive health issues, such as diabetes, obesity, and heart disease.
Marijuana has numerous medical applications, such as treating symptoms of epilepsy, cancer, and glaucoma. Legalizing the use of marijuana in the United States will greatly benefit the medical sector by giving physicians the ability to prescribe this life-saving drug.
Secondhand smoke is just as harmful as smoking and leads to a higher prevalence of cancer and heart disease; therefore, smoking in any public place should be banned.
Other things to remember while writing:
A deep analysis of any work should add something to our understanding of it, pushing the work further, making it mean more.
Please note that to do this correctly, you should listen, watch or read your source material a few times to fully understand it.
Remember the Writing Process—Brainstorm, Plan, Draft, Revise. Don’t skip a step.
This paper should be about 4 pages long. I am looking for papers no shorter than 4 pages. Anything less than 4 pages will result in major points off on the assignment.
Use examples from reliable sources. Don’t just settle on the first four articles you come across. Make sure you actually read and understand the quotes and articles you are using.
Use examples from others who have done similar research on the same topic.
Bring a full, completed draft of this paper to class by Tuesday, July 5th, 2022. July 4th is a holiday, so we are doing Tuesday this time. Again, we will be doing peer review groups again. This step is important in the grading of your final draft and you must attend to get full credit on the assignment.
*Bring in your first draft with copies for peer review on July 5th . During your peer review be sure to take a lot of notes. Things to remember about peer reviews: 1)Try not to be defensive. This is only your first draft. If it was perfect you wouldn’t need other people to review it for you. Always remember that we are only here to help. 2) When giving your notes, be considerate of how you say things. 3) All notes must be constructive. We are not here to put anyone down. Only to help.
You will turn the FINAL draft of this essay into the link on Turn-It-In (find the drop box in Bb) by Sunday, July 10th, 2022 by 11:59 pm. Make sure you turn everything into the correct place. This final draft is worth 20% of your final grade.
I will grade this paper on the following:
Structure: How well is the paper structured? Does it make logical sense? Does each paragraph have a purpose? Do your supporting paragraphs follow the order you set up in your thesis?
Substance/Content: How well developed is this paper? Do you develop your ideas clearly and go beyond the obvious? Do you explain each aspect of your paper with strong support and evidence? Did you include a Refutation with counter arguments and common ground?
Audience: Is your tone appropriate for your purpose? Please use third person point of view.
Grammar/Mechanics: There should not be any errors—or very few. Take care with your work. Use MLA formatting. We have covered MLA extensively in class. This must be done correctly or it will be considered plagiarism.
At least 3 sources done in MLA formatting. This should include BOTH in-text citations and a bibliography.
