Spencer et al. (2020) conducted a study to enlighten the future development of attractive and appropriate early and preventative school-based mental health interventions. Preventative interventions can effectively alleviate and prevent symptoms of mental ill health in children and young people. Nonetheless, there is limited research in this area examining the views of young people. The researchers employed a qualitative study design using semi-structured interviews with a purposive sample of 12 young people 14–17 years in North East England. The interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, anonymized, and analyzed using a thematic approach.

The study found that young people have mixed experiences of receiving school-based mental health support and emphasized the importance of the relationship quality between them and school staff. The participants also highlighted the importance of more frequent and in-depth delivery of mental health education, individualized levels of support, safe spaces in schools where they feel relaxed and comfortable discussing sensitive issues, and enhanced mental health training for school staff.

The study’s strength is that the researchers conducted a small number of interviews which facilitated a close relationship with the

interview participants. This enhances the rigor of in-depth inquiry through a considered approach to the complexity and context of individual participants’ experiences. However, the study used a sample of 12 participants, which is relatively small, even by the standards of qualitative research work. The reflections on some schools were based on only one participant, and thus the experiences cannot be generalized to the entire school. Besides, the study used only one method of data collection. Conducting focus groups in addition to the interviews may have produced a greater breadth of data because of the interactions and conversations facilitated amongst peers in a group setting.

With new information continually emerging, professional nurses must be equipped to critique scholarly literature and discern its value for practice.

Select one current, qualitative or mixed methods scholarly nursing article related to your PICOT question (“In adolescents and young adults ages15-25 years of age in a primary care setting, what is the effect of routine mental health screening compared to no screening on diagnosis and treatment of mental health conditions over 12 months after initiation of the intervention?”) and determine its strengths, limitations, and potential application.

Once you’ve completed the tool, use your own words to summarize your appraisal of the article. Include the following:

Description of the purpose
Explanation of research design
Discussion of sample
Description of data collection methods
Summary of findings
Strengths of the study (minimum of 1)
Limitations of the study (minimum of 1)
Recommendations regarding potential application for future practice that are insightful and appropriate.

Attach the article to your post, in addition to including the full reference for the article in your post.

During the week, read a minimum of two articles posted by peers and add your thoughts about whether you feel their article would support an EBP change.

The John Hopkins tool does not need to be turned in, it is a worksheet for you to decide what type of article you have.
