Persuasive Letter
Dear sir/ madam
I am a master environmental student at the University of Illinois. Am writing this letter to raise concern about the pollution in the Lake Michigan. On behalf of three million people who depend on water from Lake Michigan, we are greatly affected by pollution and would need your attention.
There is a tremendous escalation of pollution in Lake Michigan from the surrounding manufacturing industries in Chicago and Michigan. About five thousand industries channel their effluence into the Lake Michigan every day. Most of these contaminations are non-biodegradable since they come from the petroleum products and heavy metals. The PH of water in the Lake Michigan is slightly acidic with a PH of 6.78, which is abnormal since water is supposed to have a PH of 7.0. The lake’s ecosystem has also changed since the massive death of fish experienced due to pollution. Despite the local government efforts of restocking the lake every year, the fish population has declined over the past few years. From my master research, I have found that water of the Lake Michigan contains traces of mercury and lead, which means that some of the population come from cosmetic and oil refineries around the Lake Michigan. A good example is Whiting oil refineries, which dump a thousand gallons of oil-based litter. Mercury and lead bio-accumulate and bio-concentrate in the body and eventually have detrimental health effects since they are carcinogenic.
I think a rational solution to this problem should be coming up with legal penalties for the industries that contaminate the lake waters. I plead for the establishment of EAP office near Lake Michigan to monitor the industries around and ensure pollution is minimal. If needed, I can arrange for declaration or petition for the situation of the lake. If there is any way I can assist, please contact me. I will contact your office within three weeks’ time for a follow-up.
Sincerely
