1. Outline the following introduction:
When your life flashes before your eyes, you see all events that took place up until now. Believe it or not this is actually your brain rapidly scanning your memories to find a way to survive your current situation, and also soothe your body from the high adrenaline a near-death state puts you in. Expand on the idea of brain death “no electrical activity.” What constitutes as brain dead?
Today I want to enlighten you about “near death experiences.” I’ll explain why our brains may be deceiving us, the strong evidence for “near death experiences,” and brain activity after death.
2. Outline the following body (first main point):
Not having an accessible source of food hinders a child’s academic development. From the same report led by the Los Angeles County of Public Health, they inform us that out of the 1.2 million effected, 33.5% of households have kids. Katherine Alaimo PhD, Associate Professor at Michigan State University, led a study comparing the classroom performance of students from food insecure homes to those that were not. She gave a standardized test to her sample size, which consisted of 6-16-year old’s, split into two groups, food insecure and those who were not. Her results were that the food insecure set scores were 1.3 to 2.5 points, lower than those food secure. Additionally, the study found that 40% of food-insufficient students repeated a grade compared to 20.7% of others. Poverty and low education levels bestow a recurring cycle hard for one to break out of as a child and as an adult. Growing up food insecure will result in low educational success which could potentially lead to poverty and the cycle could continue for generations.
3. Outline the following conclusion:
Today I hope I’ve informed you about the causes and effects of light pollution.
I know that environmental and wellbeing issues concern many of you. Light pollution is probably one of the easiest problems to fix. We can choose to be healthier, happier, and more fulfilled. We can save sea turtles, and cute baby birds, just by flicking off a light switch! Of course, everyone has to do it too, so If you want to advocate for better lighting ordinances in your community please visit the International Dark Sky Association website for more information.

Notes for Chapter 10 Ten Building Blocks That Will Help You Outline the Body of Your Speech Approach Organization Logically – Look for key ideas, patterns, and trends in your research that are supported by examples, quotations, or testimony. Remember the outline is simply a tool for structure and clarity. Think in terms of the overall plan of your speech – don’t try to fill in all details at the beginning of the process. Principles of Outlining – Formal outline refers to the body of the speech and informal outline refers to the introduction, conclusion, bibliography The body should contain between two to four main points or numerals in a 4 to 7 minute speech. Main points in the body should be structures in an organizational sequence that is logical, interesting, and appropriate to the topic. Chronological Sequence Spatial Sequence Topical Sequence Other Sequences – Problem-Solution, motivation sequence . A system of Roman Numerals, letters, and Arabic numbers should be combined with indentation to identify main and subordinate levels. The Outline Should Include Supporting Materials That Are Coordinated and Subordinated in a Logical Manner. Each Subdivision Must Contain at Least Two Items. Main Points (Numerals) and Supporting Items Should be Linguistically Parallel. The Outline Should Identify Sources for Major Supporting Materials. The Outline Should Include External Transitions Between Main Numerals. Internal transitions (e.g. also, then, next, in addition to, finally) link supporting materials within a subtopic.
Body I. (first main point) A. (supporting detail) B. (supporting detail) II. (second main point) A. (supporting detail) 1. 2. B. (supporting detail) Your Speaking Notes include the introduction, body, and conclusion Write legibly, use large lettering, and double-space between some of the lines You may want colors to highlight specific examples, statistics, or quotations When transferring your outline to note cards, remember that your objective is ease of communication; you want notes to help you communicate quickly and effectively
