This week we explored Feminist Art, which emerged during the 1960’s amidst anti-war, civil and queer rights protests. We learned about how artists fought to include the female perspective in the art world, and make female artists visible. This led to reclaiming of “feminine” crafts (such as fibers and clay) and the embracing of new media like performance art that did not come with art history’s baggage. Traditional roles were questioned by many artists, as well as gender and queer identities and the long history of racism in the art world began to be addressed by artists.
For your Initial Discussion Post include:
Select an artist from this week’s readings or lecture that you found most impacted your thinking about feminism and/or gender. Choose 1 artwork of theirs to share on the Discussion Board. Include 1-3 images of the artwork and label with the artist’s name, title of work, medium and year. If site or duration is relevant information include that too. If possible, research one of the artists featured in the readings or lecture and select an artwork from their body that we did not focus on (after researching their work a bit further.)
In a few short paragraphs, share why you selected the work. Include how it impacted your thinking about feminism and/or gender. Tell us how their medium or message challenged the history of art. Share how the work is particularly relevant to the concepts covered this week.
