Look up recent news events that have impacted this Native community. Discuss what you find…How hard was it? Could you find contemporary information? If so, what did you learn? Where all do these people live now? How do these histories affect your hometown? And you?

How might Powhatan writers tell the story of Pocahontas? How might Shoshone filmmakers tell the story of Sacajawea? What films could be made about Indigenous people that don’t replicate these problems.
2. What are the differences between the portrayals of Indigeneity in Pocahontas and Moana. If you’ve seen Lilo and Stitch (which also portrays Indigenous Pacific Islanders), how is Moana similar to and different from this film? Explicitly address ongoing U.S. settler colonialism in your response. How does the inclusion of Pacific Islander people behind the scenes impact the story itself? What still remains problematic?
3. Search “Idle No More,” “Walking with our Sisters”, the Supreme Court consideration of the “Indian Child Welfare Act”, resistance to the Dakota Access Pipeline, or other activism out of Indigenous communities. Reflect on what you find and how it relates to representations of Native Americans in Disney films.
