SESS3023 MARINE HYDRODYNAMICS
ASSIGNMENT 2 – SEAKEEPING REPORT
Description:
You are tasked with performing the seakeeping analysis of the SINTEF ship model (full-scale)
available in the Blackboard folder. See the appendix for the ship particulars.
Service conditions:
You will be required to conduct the seakeeping analysis at two Froude numbers: 0.176 (15
knots) and 0.199 (17 knots).
Seaway:
For the irregular sea analysis, select the ITTC spectrum (a two-parameter spectrum) in Maxsurf
Motions, using the sea state data provided in the table below. Focus your analysis on Sea States
4 and 5 only. Refer to the criteria below to determine your assigned sea area from those listed
in the table.
Student registration number ending 0, 1, 2, or 3: Black Sea
Student registration number ending 4, 5, or 6: Mediterranean Sea
Student registration number ending 7, 8, or 9: Aegean Sea
Seakeeping Criteria
To evaluate the performance of your design, you are required to check whether your design
adheres to the following criteria:
RMS heave acceleration < 0.2g
RMS roll amplitude < 3°
RMS pitch amplitude < 2°
Report
1) Produce a report, containing an introduction in which you must explain the importance
of seakeeping performance analysis for a ship. This introduction should ideally be around
300 words. You may give references to reports or scientific publications. You may
subdivide the report into sections, but the overall structure of your submission should read
as a continuous text. That is, you should not write point-by-point answers to the questions
below.
2) Regular waves: Calculate the heave, pitch and roll responses of your ship to regular waves
for varying frequencies (as defined by default by the software) at the two different speeds
mentioned above. Select the wave headings varying from 0° to 180° with 30° increment.
Present your results as RAOs versus wave frequencies. Briefly discuss your results.
Comment on the resonant frequencies for each of the three motions and how they
are affected by a change in speed.
Comments on the parameters affecting a typical RAO curve.
If you were to conduct seakeeping experiments with the same ship model in regular
waves in our towing tank, would you expect any discrepancies between the
numerical and experimental results If so, where would the discrepancies stem
from
3) Irregular waves: Calculate the heave, pitch and roll RMS displacements in the irregular
sea states given above (for the specified sea states) at two different speeds. Your analysis
should be conducted for heading angles varying from 0° to 180° with 30° increment. You
can present your results in polar diagrams. Additionally, investigate whether any of the
seakeeping criteria are violated for any speeds and wave headings (for each of the sea states
assigned to you above). Present a critical discussion of your results.
When discussing your results, also consider the following questions:
If you were asked to conduct an irregular sea analysis in sea state 6 and 7, would
the results from 2-D linear theory be accurate and why (please do not conduct
analyses in sea states 6 and 7, this is a hypothetical question)
Briefly discuss the limitations of the seakeeping theory used in Maxsurf and
comment on how to improve the accuracy.
Marking breakdown:
Category Weighting
Accuracy of results/calculations (use of the software package, performance of
calculations, and analysis of the results, as requested) 40%
Critical discussion of the results and demonstration of your understanding
(including how you have responded to the questions given under the Report
section)
40%
Introduction section + technical writing 10%
Presentation of the report (structure and tidiness of the report) 10%
This coursework will form 15% of your module mark.
Deadline:
The deadline for this coursework is 10 pm on Thursday 14th May 2026.
Word limit:
Your report should not exceed 1200 words. If you exceed the word limit, you will be penalised
by 5% for each 250 words that you’ve exceeded the limit. Please state your word count on the
cover page of each report. The references list (if any) is not included in the word limit. This is
an individual assignment. Your report must be your own work and should demonstrate your
own understanding.
GenAI Assessment Setter: Tier 2. Assistive use
Students may use GenAI to help achieve intended learning outcomes, which are still achievable
without GenAI use. Please refer to the Specification Table. Students must complete a
declaration form. Please submit your declaration forms separately from your report using a
specific submission portal on Blackboard.
