Chapter 10 starts with a discussion of “arguably the most expensive prison on Earth: The Pentagon detention center at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, Cuba” or “Gitmo” as it is frequently dubbed. Gitmo was the subject of a recent The Mauritania movie, One of the actors in the movie, Benedict Cumberbatch plans to ask President Biden to shut down the facility after what he learned during filming. Citing a New York Times story that has the per prisoner cost at $13 million (even higher than the $8 million cited by your text) during an interview with Entertainment Weekly,
It is a huge spend. It’s the most expensive prison on earth. And what are the results? Where are the prosecutions? That’s just being really brutally economic about it, it just doesn’t work … And then you have the human rights issue. It’s an atrocious own goal, I think for the free world to be incarcerating people through extraordinary rendition, torturing them, and extracting confessions they think are then usable in prosecution… it is a really dangerous, unnecessary, and ineffectual place, I think, and enough people have suffered there.
Are the exorbitant costs of incarceration at Gitmo justified? Should Gitmo be closed? If yes, what should be done with the remaining inmates? If no, should Gitmo remain in operation until the last inmate dies?
