Aims and Background
The aim of this essay is to critically evaluate policies and health promotion programs
aimed at improving Indigenous health.
This assignment relates to the Unit Learning Outcomes of:
4. Critically appraise Indigenous health policies at a National and Global scale
5. Incorporate and critically analyse data specific to Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander health and wellbeing
Instructions
You will write an academic essay that addresses the following:
Choose one of the following essay questions and write a response for a
scientifically literate but non-specialist audience (e.g. a peer):
1. Explore how a strength-based approach to improving cardiovascular health
might promote better health outcomes among Indigenous Australians
2. Compare and contrast TWO cultural safety programs targeted to allied health
professional audiences working with Indigenous populations in Australia. What are
their key aims? What data do they use to support their initiatives? How would you
evaluate the success of the programs?
3. Imagine you are responsible for admitting patients at a local hospital
emergency department. How will you ensure you are meeting the specific cultural
and health needs of any Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander patients you admit?
Consider the roles of liaison staff and other relevant stakeholders.
4. Develop your own essay question in collaboration with the Unit Convenor
that covers the relevant Learning Outcomes for the assessment
In your essay:
• Identify and describe relevant concepts of Indigenous health and wellbeing
• Critically analyse health promotion interventions and policies intended to
improve Indigenous health and wellbeing
• Engage with relevant data regarding Indigenous health and health promotion
Suggested structure for your essay:
1. Introduction (approx. 10% of word count)
• State the question and the aims of the essay
• Define key terms/concepts (ideas)
• Briefly outline what the essay will cover (signposting)
• If taking an argumentative approach, clearly state what perspective you will
be arguing for
2. Body paragraphs
• Organise the information of your essay into paragraphs that each contain
ONE central point
• Introduce each paragraph with a topic sentence that identifies what the
paragraph will be covering
• Provide a number of supporting sentences containing evidence of key points
and synthesis of the literature. All claims made should be supported by
citations
• Conclude each paragraph with a brief summary and, where possible, link to
the next paragraph
3. Conclusion (approx. 10% of word count)
• Based on information presented in the introduction and body provide a
summary of the topic
• Identify areas for future research in the area
Reference list
• An ordered list of source materials used must be included. There is no
minimum or maximum number of references required but an essay citing
fewer than 5 high quality, peer-reviewed sources is unlikely to demonstrate
good synthesis of the literature
• Sources may include:
o Data from Australian Bureau of Statistics or Australian Institute of
Health and Welfare
o Peer-reviewed journal articles
o Academic text books (recently published)
o Government websites
o Association websites e.g. Alzheimer’s Australia etc.
