Your mission is:

to produce an expertly designed catalogue that presents your topic’s essence or ‘DNA’ . Be sure to highlight the significance of your topic in the history of design. This is a kind of exhibition catalogue (without the actual exhibition).

So including lots of images is essential.

Throughout the catalogue you create a clear and engaging 1000 word academic essay that builds an evidence-based critical analysis of your topic, a well-informed, incisive inquiry that positions your selected topic within a broader context of geographical, social, political, material, technological and economic forces.

You are encouraged to be innovative, to create visual and tactile interest. Sound could be included.

In addition to working with appropriate references listed under your topic and in the Reading List, you are required to find at least ONE additional substantial and academically credible reference to inform your inquiry.

Format:

The format will depend on the nature of your topic – it should reflect the DNA of your topic (radical, conservative, highly designed, experimental, technology-based, political propaganda etc).

Format can be anything from a pdf of a small format booklet to a pdf of a large size poster.

Be creative with your layouts and page sizes.

Design: You are designers looking at the context of design – design is central to this Catalogue: it should be intelligently and beautifully designed.

Images: are the key to the DNA of the catalogue. Ensure you position these so as to clearly convey what they are, why they are there, authorship etc.

Edit: for precision, design intent (positioning and DNA), spelling, grammar, clarity and AVOID repetition.

Tip: The Situationists (Guy Debord), Archigram, the Bauhaus and others have produced interesting publications, posters, propaganda that may inspire you.
