ASSIGNMENT TASK:
For this second assessment you are required to create and present a research poster which
outlines and justifies a research topic, the key theories (theoretical framework), the chosen research methods and proposed data analysis and data presentation approaches.
●Submission date: You will be notified when to start preparing for your poster presentation and you will be given the date of the actual presentation.
MARKING CRITERIA:
● Below are the marking criteria that align with both the task(s) set and the quality of your presentation. Clear weightings/marks will be noted for each criterion.
● The overall mark awarded for this assignment will explicitly show how the mark was calculated based on your performance against each criterion.
TASK GUIDANCE:
●Focus on attention to detail, quality of work and overall academic standards.
Specific task guidance for this assignment:
The Practical Examination (Poster presentation) is to be done once all other modules have
been assessed and you have gained sufficient credits to proceed to this final stage of the
programme.
You are required to produce a research proposal that will be presented as a research poster
(see Appendix 1 of the study pack). Guidance will be given on how to design the poster at the block teaching week. Note that you are not permitted to conduct data collection and so this is a discussion of the research design you would employ for your research.
Your poster must include the following:
1. Name & Programme of Study: Your NAME and PROGRAMME of study
2. Title of Research: The Title should summarise/reflect the main idea or ideas of your study.
3. Aim of Research: An aim explains what your study sets out to address.
4. Objectives of Research: The steps taken to address your aim. You need three objectives the first two will work as main headings for two sections of literature and the third will describe your primary/secondary research.
5. Rationale: The rationale of your research is the reason for conducting the study. Rationale needs to establish the research gap this may be the gap in the literature from previous academic studies/government initiatives/organisational policy/initiatives with references of currency-(last 5 years) Please summarise your rationale; do not simply repeat what was submitted for assignment 1.
6. Theory & Theoretical Framework: You need to present a theoretical framework and outline why the theory is relevant to your study and how you will use the information from it to conduct and evaluate your research and findings.
7. Data Collection Methods & Procedures: Outline the logistics your proposed research method. Why is it the best method to address your study. Who are your participants and how will you reach them and conduct the research. What is your sampling strategy (probability/non-probability).
9. Ethics: In the design of your research tool consider ethical practice: informed consent, anonymity, recordings
9. Data Analysis: How will you analyse and present your collected data against the theoretical framework.
10. Reference List: A full and complete reference list adhering to UCB
referencing standards.
NB: The POSTER is a research proposal – the research is NOT to be actually conducted.
In addition, please note: Each student MUST upload a copy of the poster presentation to the Research Design practical examination submission point in Canvas by 23.00 hours on the day of the presentation.
Feedback will be published on Canvas when the assessment process is finalised.
Practical Examination format for live presentations:
It is expected that at least 1500-2000 words will be needed to cover the tasks adequately,
including any charts, tables or figures.
You should use a readable font size (e.g. Arial 12/14) as your poster will be attached to a wall
or laid out on a table for lecturers to read.
You will be assessed on the poster content and the quality of your verbal explanations and
reasoning. (Study pack Appendix 2: Assessment sheet).
This is an individual piece of work and will take place via a Microsoft Teams meeting with an assessor from UCB. You will be asked to present the details of your research design to an assessor who will ask you questions. You will need to be prepared to go into more detail and justify your research choices
●For additional guidance on this assignment, please access the assignment vodcast available on Canvas.
GUIDANCE FOR LIVE FACE-TO-FACE PRESENTATIONS:
●All students must verify their identity with their student ID card before the live session starts. If you do not have your ID card (which is a mandatory requirement across all UCB campuses), please speak to the assessor about an alternative way to verify your identity.
●Please note that all sessions will be recorded by the assessor, as this will be required for the examiner’s observation.
Specific guidance on presentations for this assignment [please include guidance on timings, number of slides (if relevant), creating effective slides, and showcasing lists of references within the presentation]:
This assignment will require you to become familiar with and use Canvas discussion boards.
Please follow this online guide that shows you how to access and post to discussion boards on Canvas. Contact the DICE team on dice@ucb.ac.uk if you need any further support.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
●Learning Outcomes are what the student needs to demonstrate after completing a module. An assessment is a way in which students can demonstrate their achievement of these Learning Outcomes. Learning Outcomes are NOT the same as the assignment task.
●The Learning Outcomes assessed by this assignment are:
i. Evaluate the key issues surrounding data collection and sampling methods employed by businesses and not-for-profit groups.
ii. Critically appraise the issues that influence and effect data analyses, interpretation and communication of findings.
iii. Develop a theoretical framework and accompanying methodology
iv. Design a research proposal to investigate identified issues
ACADEMIC SKILLS OUTCOMES:
●The Academic Skills Outcomes to be developed by completing this assignment can be found here.
GENERAL ASSIGNMENT GUIDANCE:
Using Artificial Intelligence (AI) ethically within your assessments Please read the information below on how to use AI ethically within your assignments, including Grammarly. Please ask your lecturer or CASE if you are unclear about any information within this link. If a marker has questions about how you have used AI within your assignment, you may be invited to a meeting to discuss your work. https://rise.articulate.com/share/4h250QmyY8hNnsQ9HS7B702dJedhlsM6
Teamwork Assessment
Should this assignment require you to work as part of a team, you will receive an individual grade based on your performance and personalised feedback. The assignment brief will provide clear details on how your individual grade and feedback will be determined against the task and marking criteria.
Importance of Presentation Timings
Timings must be observed for all assessed presentations/practical exams. For live sessions, the assessor will stop the assessment once the time has been reached.
Cut-off date for late submissions (including for students with ECs and/or Support Plans) The cut-off time for late submissions is as follows:
Original assessment period – 10 working days after the due date
Resit assessment period – 24 hours after the due date.
After this time, you cannot submit any late assessments, even if you have Extenuating Circumstances to cover them. Students with Support Plans may have additional time to submit their work after the formal submission date for the original assignments only.
During the Resit assessment period, the maximum cut-off time for late submissions is 24 hours, regardless of whether a student has a support plan or extenuating circumstances.
