Writing a Walden discussion post: what to do by Day 3 and Day 6

Most Walden courses use the same weekly rhythm: an initial post by Day 3, replies to colleagues by Day 6, and the main assignment by Day 7. The discussion rubric is separate, so it is worth planning the post as carefully as the paper.

The initial post

Answer every part of the prompt, in the order it is asked. Use the prompt’s own wording as short headings or opening phrases so the instructor can see each element. Support each claim with the week’s readings plus at least one outside scholarly source from the last five years.

  • Open with a direct answer, not background.
  • Use an example from your own practice or workplace, anonymised.
  • Close with a sentence that ties back to the prompt.

Replies that earn marks

Rubrics reward replies that move the discussion on. Agreeing is not enough. Add a new source, offer a different perspective, or ask a question that connects your colleague’s point to policy, evidence or practice.

Late posts usually lose points even when the content is strong. Post by Day 3 even if you plan to refine your thinking in replies.

APA in discussions

Walden expects APA 7 in discussions too: in-text citations and a reference list under the post. Title pages and abstracts are not needed.
