Essay 3: Story Review
A “review essay” is an essay that evaluates/critiques/reviews a place or thing (in this case, a story). You will choose a story (a book, movie, show, song, etc.), and then you will evaluate or critique it using specific criteria to guide you.
Prompt: Write an essay evaluating (weighing the good and/or bad) a story of your choosing. Ideally, you will choose a story that you think demonstrates “good” storytelling. Stories can include books, movies, shows, video games, etc. Body paragraphs should focus on different criteria used to evaluate the story. Support should be specific and compelling.
Genre(s): Evaluative (to critique) and Persuasive (to convince)
Audience: The Public (imagined). This essay is good practice for any future occasions when you are asked to evaluate someone or something and/or to convince someone of something’s value. Imagine you are publishing this review online for anyone to see. That does not, however, mean the review cannot be playful; this is not an academic audience. Have fun with it!
Purpose: To evaluate a story using specific criteria; to convince others that the chosen story demonstrates “good” storytelling.
