For paper #3, I want you to develop your own topic and thesis based on any of the authors we have read the this term. Choose something from Dewey, Parfit, etc and develop your own ideas.
You paper should be an argument, so your thesis should be something like “In this paper, I will argue that _________”.
If you’re stumped for a topic, think about the papers we have written already. They have asked you to apply a given thinker(s) work to a problem (consciousness, civil disobedience). You can frame your paper similarly by asking “What would Marx (or whomever) think about X?” where X is a philosophical problem or social issue.
External research is not necessarily required, but may be necessary depending on your paper. Such research must be properly cited, of course.
I am happy to review any ideas and potential thesis statements. Just let me know how I can support you!
In addition to the above, the criteria for the A paper is largely the same as for the previous two argument papers:
YOU MUST CITE ANY PARAPHRASED OR QUOTED MATERIAL IN YOUR ESSAY. This includes any material taken from the assigned readings, as well as any additional material you use in writing your essay.
While philosophy typically uses the Chicago Manual of Style format for references, you may use EITHER APA or MLA format.
You need to have a works cited page as well as parenthetical citations when necessary.
Feel free to use any additional scholarly material to help you write this paper. This is a well researched topic and many articles exist that could help you.
The paper should be 3-4 pages long. The works cited page does not count as one of the 3-4 pages.
Grading
In order to earn an A grade (typically a 95, adjusted slightly up or down), the paper MUST have ALL of the following:
A clear thesis
A brief introduction that focuses on outlining the paper’s argument
A brief but clear explanation of key concepts, particularly justice.
A well formed, clear argument for the paper’s position
A brief conclusion that summarizes the paper’s argument
Proper citations
A complete works cited page. (Note: the works cited page does not count as one of the 3-4 pages for the paper
Page numbers
Evidence of editing for typos, grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc
B papers (85 + or -) may miss one or more of the above, but still have all the key elements (definitions and arguments).
C papers have insufficiently developed key portions, and/or have elements that interfere with readability.
D papers fail to meet the key requirements of the assignment. They may lack citations altogether or fail to develop any sort of argument.
