Industry report: Questions
Select an industry on which the assignment will be based. Then prepare a
report on the industry that answers the following questions.
a) Identify the key features of structure, conduct and performance in the
industry. To what extent does the S-C-P paradigm provide a valid
explanation of the conduct and performance in the industry
b) Select two topics or theories or concepts from lectures. Describe how
your chosen topic(s) explain the structure and/or conduct and/or
performance of your selected industry.
Assessment weighting:
Part a) is worth one third of the assessment.
Each topic in part b) is worth one third of the assessment.

Submission
Please submit the report by 5 pm on Monday 11th May (assessment
period).
The report requires online submission only: you do not need to
submit a hard copy.
The work submitted must be your own with all sources drawn on
properly attributed.
The report constitutes 60% of the mark for this module.

Word counts
The report should be a maximum of 2,000 words.
The word count is an absolute upper limit. Penalties will apply for
work submitted that exceeds the word limit.
The following are not included in word counts:
Reference lists/bibliographies and question titles
Appendices/footnotes – provided these have been used only when
necessary. If appendices or footnotes are used excessively, or contain
material which should clearly be included in the main body of the
essay/report, it is at the markers’ discretion to include these in the
word count.
Tables/graphs – provided these have been imported from elsewhere
(correctly referenced) and not produced by the student.

Word counts
As well as the essay/report itself, the following are included in word
counts:
Citations/quotations – this includes the material paraphrased/quoted
itself as well as the name, date and page information.
Tables and graphs – if they have been produced by the student.
Executive summaries in reports – unless otherwise stated.

proper use of theoretical ideas to guide the analysis of actual
circumstances and events in the area;
correct use of terminology;
ability to explain ideas and events;
evidence of an informed decision about what areas to concentrate on
and which are the key arguments.

choice of suitable sources of information;
ability to go beyond mere description and build a logical and reasoned
case;
ability to compare and contrast different opinions;
quantity and quality of evidence underpinning major
points/conclusions.

3. Writing and communication skills:
logical sequence;
proper introduction and conclusions where appropriate;
clear tables, diagrams and referencing;
good use of English and fluent style;
ability to argue to reasoned conclusions regarding the adequacy of the
theoretical frameworks you draw on and links to the literature.

90%-100%: Thorough and authoritative execution of the brief.
Containing evidence of significant independent research, reflective,
perceptive, well structured, showing significant originality in ideas or
argument, aptly focused and very well written, in appropriate register;
few areas for improvement.
80%-89%: Thorough execution of the brief, well-structured, clearly
argued, signs of originality and/or independent critical analytical
ability. Supported by independent research, materials well utilised;
well-focused and very well written.
70%-79%: Good execution of the brief; well-focused, knowledgeable,
well-written, strong evidence of reading beyond the basic texts and
displays mastery of the subject matter.

60%-69%: Well-structured and well-focused answer with strong
evidence of reading beyond the basic texts. Well-written with few
linguistic errors, thorough and comprehensive in approach. Displays a
good knowledge of the subject matter and an ability to discuss
theories and concepts.
50%-59%: Competently structured answer, reasonably well-focused
and comprehensive but tending to be descriptive in approach. Limited
evidence of reading beyond the basic texts. Reasonably well-written,
perhaps some minor errors in spelling, register grammar or syntax.
40%-49%: Relies largely upon lecture materials and basic texts.
Descriptive in approach, limited knowledge and understanding of the
subject matter displayed; partial and/or containing significant errors
and/or irrelevancies; poorly structured. Perhaps some inaccuracies in
English which occasionally affect comprehension of ideas

30%-39%: Inadequate execution of the brief. Highly partial and/or
containing serious errors; contents partly or substantially irrelevant.
Poorly structured. Displays little knowledge of the subject matter.
Perhaps some inaccuracies in English which affect comprehension of
ideas.
0%-29%: Seriously inadequate execution of the brief. Failure to
focus upon the question. Seriously short or even devoid of theoretical
under-pinning. Large sections irrelevant. Evidence of potential
plagiarism. Perhaps some serious weaknesses in use of English which
affect the communication of ideas.

than 12pts, in single spacing
or with inadequate margins

Word Length: Coursework

length specified by the mod ule leader
3 marks or pro rata per part thereof will be deducted for
every 100 words by which the work exceeds the maximum
length. For example, where a piece of work is 200 words
over length, 6 marks will be deducted; 1 mark will be lost
for work that exceeds the limit by 30 words etc.

Referencing and Poor Aca demic Practice
Poor or dishonest academic practice, including poor refer encing, plagiarism, copying, collusion and dishonest use of
data will be penalised as outlined in the University’s Aca demic Integrity Policy.1

Deviation from Guidelines Penalty
Work submitted up to five
working days after the dead line set (standard University
penalty)
5% of the total marks available for the assessment shall
be deducted from the assessment mark for each working
day after the submission deadline, up to a maximum of
five working days. E.g., for work marked out of 100, five
marks per day will be deducted. The mark will not be
reduced below the pass mark for the assessment. Work
assessed below the pass mark will not be penalised for late
submission.

A mark of zero will be awarded. Where a student is re quired to re-sit the assessment, the assessment task must
be different from the original assessment. Resubmission of
