Our readings today elevate a few themes we have previously discussed. 1) What are the consequences for democracies when we don’t have a genuinely free press based on informing the public (but rather profit based, corporate/ ad driven media conglomerates)? 2) Is it possible to have a more genuinely informative, unbiased, fact-driven media?
Answer the following two questions:
In your opinion, what are the TWO most significant barriers to a genuinely free press outlined in today’s readings?
In the readings by Cavanaugh and Mander, the authors discuss the possibilities of creating a more democratic or alternative media including arguing that the media really are (or ought to be) a part of the global “commons.” What do they mean by this?. What are their solutions? What would it take to make them a reality in your opinion? If we recognized and acted upon this fact (or perspective) as a nation, how would/might our media be different?

A. Gayatri Spivak asks the question of whether the subaltern can speak. Many of our readings emphasize that this is difficult to achieve through the media. Focusing on economic class, answer the following questions.
How do the media distort or ignore the working class? According to our readings, why do the media distort or ignore the working class? Give one example of a TV show or movies that marginalizes the working class. Also, (if you can) give us an example of one TV show or movie that represents the working class in a positive light.
